Why the Galaxy S7 is still in the game in 2018

Released in April 2016, the Galaxy S7 is now starting to show its age… but only on paper, because the truth is that’s not the case at all! The smartphone is indeed aging well and is so popular (it’s the smartphone most used by our readers) that it will likely find its way into more pockets in the coming months. So why such well-sustained success? And what makes this phone such a good investment, even in 2018?

A design and screen that remains up to date

Although bezel-less designs made a big splash on smartphones in 2018, and even found their way onto mid-range models, the Galaxy S7 still retains an honorable and up-to-date look more than two years after its release. Its design is pleasant to the eye and to the touch, and I particularly appreciate the easy handling and the compact size of the smartphone. Another notable aspect is that there is no protrusion on the back of the phone from the camera lens. On this model, there’s no button dedicated to the Bixby virtual assistant, which in my opinion is a plus, since the assistant is hardly useful at all. You could call the Galaxy S7 Samsung’s original sketch that they have since been coloring in with new features.

Its 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display, with its WQHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels) is still well on par with many current models, including those recently released. Even people who want to use their smartphone for virtual reality can still use the Galaxy S7, since a pixel density of 570 pixels per inch is more than sufficient.

Good autonomy and fluid software

In terms of autonomy, the Galaxy S7 still performs well. The smartphone offers 3000 mAh of battery capacity (just like the Galaxy S8 or S9), but like previous generations, the smartphone has a less energy consuming processor and a smaller display. This means that the S7 can give you a day and a half (or even more) of at battery life without too many problems. It’s hard to complain about autonomy like that, especially since the device is also compatible with fast charging. We should also note the Galaxy S7’s connectivity: it has a micro-USB plus and not a Type-C plug.

On the software side, the Galaxy S7 has recently also benefited from Android Oreo, the same version that is currently used by its successors. True, Samsung isn’t the most reputable manufacturer in terms of the fast deployment of Android updates, but it has at least kept its promise in this case. However, you should forget about getting an update to Android Pie. It’s very unlikely that the South Korean manufacturer will offer an update on its old flagship.

Some interesting features and an affordable price

Without an iris scanner, the Galaxy S7 comes instead with a fingerprint reader. Unlike the generations that followed it, the sensor is located on the front panel and is effective. The smartphone also has a heart rate monitor that can take your pulse, which can sometimes be useful for athletes.

Another advantage is the price! First marketed for 699 dollars, the Galaxy S7 is now available for around 300 dollars. You should, however, be careful with sellers who offer it at discounted prices because the smartphone is often the subject of counterfeiting.

Conclusion: still in the running

If you want to give a premium Samsung smartphone for Christmas but you can’t (or don’t want to) invest a lot of money, you should give the Galaxy S7 some consideration. Its performance is still up to par and the photos are of good quality, even in 2018. You should also be aware that some alternatives are now available from competitors at a similar price. We should mention the Honor Play and the Xiaomi Pocophone F1.

I've got both the S7 Edge and the S10 (I'm a Samsung guy).

The S7 Edge is a smartphone which lives and dies by it's looks.

This is the best phone I've ever had. Period.

The quality of the screen is fantastic. The camera is spectacular and takes amazing videos and photographs even in low light.
It is water proof. The curved screen is it's beauty. It's super fast with an octa core processor and 4gb RAM, meaning it can handle any demanding app with ease. The battery can easily get you through morning and evening with moderate/heavy use. It's also water resistant to IP68 rating, meaning it can easily survive splashes or a dunking in the bath. It's got expandable storage through a micro SD card. I got it in April 2017 direct from Samsung for £599 and it's still going strong. It's got a scratch-resistant screen. You can bag a brand new one on eBay for around £240 now. Worth every penny. I'm not getting rid of this phone anytime soon even though I've got the S10. It's so good I still use it as my main phone and not the S10. I also don't normally give reviews but have to make an exception in this case. Even in 2019, this is a solid smartphone packed with power and features!

Got my Galaxy S7 Edge for chump change (less than lunch money) on ebay. Yes it has some defects (that's why it's so cheap) but it works great as dedicated camera! Just put my SD card in and take all the photos and videos I want and off load it from SD card later! It's shocking how cheap these defective Galaxy S7/S7 edge are on ebay. But as long as screen and camera works, it's great dedicated shooter, almost as good as Galaxy s9. Can't beat it!

I'm ok holding onto my s7 for a bit longer. The battery has weakened
but that's the worst of it. My next phone will be pure Android though. I'm liking the new Nokia 7.1

I'd love my Samsung S7 Edge more if I could actually update the phone. It notifies me that there's an update for the phone itself to be had, but it fails every time. It gets to 27% in the install and then nothing.

My S7Edge was a fantastic device. I just moved up to a S9+ but loved The edge for many reasons. No bixby. Less bloat ware.

I've had my fantastic Galaxy S7 for the last 2 years and I can't fault it. Getting the Android 8.0 upgrade was a very pleasing surprise.
I'm due a upgrade in December but certainly will not be doubling my monthly contract bill for the S9 (I currently pay £30 p/m the S9 is currently priced at £69 with EE)
I will most likely wait for the S10 and get it direct from Samsung.
Though I'm seriously thinking about getting another S7 maybe S8 - I thought about a cheaper Chinese phone but I'm a true Samsung fan since I first got my old faithful) S3 (which is living in retirement as a security cam).
I like Samsung and touchwiz/SE - but I really don't like the idea of paying over £1000 for a phone.
I've also invested in the excellent Galaxy Tab S4 which I use as my main device, so really the phone is needed for its original use - a phone.

Lots of thinking to do, I have to resist the urge to let Brand advertising persuade me to pay exorbitant amount of money to enable me to make a phone call....

    Peace 🖖

Glad to hear someone else is retiring old phones as security cameras. We do this in our house. Alfred is the service we use. I'm with you on spending a ton on a new phone. It's a tough bullet to bite, I usually wait until its half price and buy used or refurbished. I wish the Note 9 would drop too the $500 mark then I'd be all over it.
